Hello Fifth Graders!

The summer is here and we'll have plenty of time to read. I'm looking forward to begin chipping away at an ever-growing list of books: some I've read reviews about, some I've heard about on the radio, others were recommended by my peers or even you, my students. Then there are the books that will draw me in the ol' fashioned way; they have a wicked cool cover :)

I'll be checking here from time to time to let you know what I've been up to,
and I hope you do the same.

  1. I see both you and Mrs. Morrissey plan to read Dead End in Norvelt this summer. Can I borrow it from one of you when you are done?

  4. I'm back from a fantastic trip to Ocean City, New Jersey.
I was able to finish my first book of the summer, "Notes from the Midnight Driver". I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not sure what I'll read next, but I do have "Nicholas St. North and the Battle of the Nightmare King" waiting by my bed.

I haven't read "Night Wings" or "The River Down Deep". They sound interesting . . . I'm guessing vampires and snapping turtles? :)

Great to see there's some life out there = keep the comments coming!

  8. I was able to read a great graphic novel this weekend = "Ghostopolis" by Doug TenNapel. He's able to put a lot of humor and heart into his characters. If you need a little sci-fi to cool you off from this heatwave, try this book (I'll return it to the library asap :) TenNapel's "Bad Island" is good as well.

  10. Hi Mr.Arinello it's baseball123! So far this summer I've read "Harris and Me" by Gary Paulsen. Also, I've read "Tuck Everlasting" by Natalie Babbitt. Harris and Me is about these two boys that get into a lot of trouble! But, they have a lot of fun too! Tuck Everlasting is about a girl that meets these people and goes on a exciting adventure!

  14. hi its frosty again ive just started reading a book called "vanished " by Marc Nobleman. This book is about people who have gone on adveantures or have been doing their daily work or even people who are famous that have disapeared. These people might have been kidnapped or might have gone somewhere then get lost. Some people might have been found and some still are missing this book tells true stories and i think it is a great book.

  15. Hi Mr.A it's bball123 and I just read the book called the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and it was awesome. Now I'm reading the Black Book of Secrets FE Higgins.

    ReplyDelete
  16. hi mr a its finn10 i think the book is called the beadel and the bard.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Keep up the reading! Your feedback is awesome!! :)

If you liked the Nobleman book of true "vanished" stories, you might like the Haddix "Missing" series. It's science fiction that includes just enough truth to make you wonder . . . .

The Hunger Games have been on my "must read" list for 3+ summers now >:( However, I have read Black Book of Secrets, and I enjoyed it. I really liked the Latin references. The book is part of a series (sort of). I'd like to read the second one The Bone Magician and others.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard plays a major role in Harry's last adventurous book, The Deathly Hallows. So when J K Rowling released it individually, apart from the Potter series, it was a big deal. You've reminded me that I haven't read it . . . hmmmmmmmmmm :)

P.S. Rowling had originally made special jeweled Beedle the Bard books as gifts = cool!

Keep reading everyone. The summer is long :)
Expect a letter in the mail soon from me.

  27. It's our second Blizzard Bag Day! What better way to celebrate than to visit our summer reading blog :)

I'll spend some time reading a novel I got for Christmas, "Clockwork Angels". It's science fiction. The characters live in what seems to be a utopian (look it up :) world, but trouble is brewing with the protagonist, Owen. His perspectives are changing. He thinks, "In a world where I feel so small, I can't stop thinking big."

Enjoy the snow. Enjoy a good book.

  31. Dear Mr. A,
I have been reading The Lemonade War for my second time because I love the whole book! I am going to Florida soon for AAU basketball Nationals and plan to read on the plane. I have been playing a lot of basketball this last week at SNHU hoop skills and AAU games.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hi Amelia,
I hope your trip to Florida was fun. Did you have time to visit Disney?
I just read an interesting article about Brad Stevens. What's your opinion?
Maybe you had a chance to meet him down there?

P.S. The Lemonade War sounds perfect for this weather :)

I hear the fourth book in the series, "The House of Hades," will be out in October of this year. It will probably be in our Scholastic book orders. The next Percy Jackson movie, "The Sea of Monsters," will be out around then, too :)

What else are you reading besides Riordan?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Dear Mr. A

I finished reading the third book of the series and I can't wait for the fourth book to come out! Kind of sad that I have to wait! I also have been reading a book by Tim Green and it is called Football Hero. Today my family went to Diana's bath and had fun in the water falls!

  37. That's a great mix, Abby = good for you to give different authors/genres a try.
I've been reading a text book for a class I'm taking this summer. It's pretty interesting,
but I won't bother recommending it for the class to read :)

Stay cool everyone! Beat the heat at the beach or by the pool, run through a sprinkler, or ice cream always works, too (clarification = don't run through your ice cream; eat it :)

  39. Dear Mr.A,

While I was at Camp Huckins I was receiving lots of letters and writing alot. I am almost done with the Princess Diaries. You had asked me if I got to visit Disney and I did. The games were at the ESPN World Wide of Sports and we got to go to Downtown Disney after some games. Close to the end of the trip I got to go to Blizzard Beach! You had also asked me about my opinion on Brad Stevens article. My mom sent the article to me at camp and I think he will be a good coach after he has some practice getting use to the NBA level. Hope you have a good end of the summer.

    1. Thanks for getting back to me, Amelia. It sounds like you had a lot of fun in Florida. I never went to camp but I've heard great things about them, especially Camp Huckins. Did you ever give Hugo Cabret a try? I watched an interview with the author the other day = he seems a lot younger than I had imagined.

      Delete
  40. Dear Mr.A,

I started to read the book Hugo Cabret. Although I found the story through pictures interesting, I really like books where I can imagine the words myself. I have been doing lots of IXL problems. It is very relaxing to me.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with you, Amelia. I've been caught up in IXL before, too. It's sort of like a good book = you think you'll put it down after the next chapter but then you have to read just one more, then just one more, and so on, and so on, and so on . . . ; ) What did you win today?
As for Hugo, I can see your point about the pictures, but there are plenty of words to imagine as well. And haven't you heard, a picture is worth a thousand words? : ) I wonder how long the book would have been written if the drawings were left out. I wonder what words they would have been.

  41. Hi Mr. A,

Having a good summer. Went to Canobie Lake Park yesterday. I had a great time. The roller coaster was my favorite! Just starting the book, Growing Up Gronk: A Family's Story of Raising Champions. It's about the five Gronkowski brothers and their commitment to fitness and health and their determination to succeed as professional athletes. I will let you know how I liked it when I finish the book.

    1. Hi Justin,
It's good to hear from you. You'll have to tell me all about the Gronk family when we get back to school. I hope their champion ways continue (some other brothers might get in their way = Manning) I'm looking forward to the NFL season getting started, but the Sox have my full attention these days :) See you soon.

    1. Hi Abby,
Sorry to hear about your poison ivy. My brother-in-law had it this summer, too. He blamed his pet dog and wished he was near the ocean = saltwater helps sooth the itch? Camp offers a lot of time for reading. I'm glad you were able to find some books to enjoy. You'll have to register them in your Reader's Notebook and make some recommendations to your classmates. An alien in a bottle reminds me of Aladdin = that movie cracks me up, and my big sister is very bossy, too :)
      See you soon,
      Mr. A.

  43. Hi Mr.A!

So far this summer I have read:

The Sideways Stories of the Wayside School 1 and 2, - written by Louis Sachar. I liked them.

I also read Great Escapes of World War 2 by George Sullivan. I really liked this book much more than the others.

I really like comedy and Waysides are funny that's a reason I liked it. I really liked Great Escapes because I like action/adventure stuff.

Have a great summer, the 7 days we have left.

    2. Thanks, Jonathan! It's great to hear your opinions. I'm pretty sure I have
the rest of Sachar's series in class, so you'll have to check them out soon.
I love that you mixed it up with some non-fiction, too.
Have you seen the movie Victory? My boys liked it because it had Pele in it, and it's an awesome WWII story (not a true one, though :)
      See you soon!
